I’m not sure where to start with this blog post. I can’t stress enough how important I think it is for us to do personal work/projects as regularly as we can. It is so easy to get caught up in the day to day routine, worrying about the most immediate task that needs to be done and as a result putting our needs – or doing something that recharges us creatively – as a low priority.

As a result, I came up with this project I call “Two lives, One love – A retrospective”. Basically, I want to donate some personal time to helping couples celebrate the great achievement of melding their lives together (a true marriage of body and soul) – by actually going the distance. I want to give them a voice to say “ Hey, we made it!” and for us to say “Congratulations, you are legends”.

What do I get out of it? I get to take pictures, listen to stories and be reminded of how beautiful, fragile and rewarding life can be.

Enter my first amazing couple in this project, Ginger and Pearl!! These lovebirds have been living in the same house in Canberra, Australia for over 65 years. They grow their own tomatoes – they have an amazing bird aviary and more fridge magnets than I have ever seen before (souvenirs collected over the years by them, their friends and family members of the places they have travelled). Ginger and Pearl are from a working class generation. Ginger spends most his days restoring old wooden furniture (his varnish stained hands tell the story of many a happy piece of furniture that has left the shed). He also managed to score a hat trick many years ago while playing for his local cricket team (and has the trophy to show for it)! Pearl is nearly blind but spends her days working in the garden and feeding mince meat to the kookaburras and magpies that sit on her clothes line each day. Pearl also has a photo frame that contains the photographs of all their pets that have passed away over the years (including one called Angry Cat).

I cannot begin to fathom what they have built together in the way of a foundation for their family – what they have seen – what they have shared and even, at times, what they have fought for. What I do know, however, is that I spent a little piece of three separate days with them and I didn’t want to leave…

Ginger and Pearl, there aren’t enough words that I can offer you to tell you how much respect I have for the both of you. You were so kind and generous enough to allow me a glimpse of your life and for this I will be forever grateful.

dan.... these are so beautiful. so beautiful... the first time you showed me these images.. they changed me.. they made me see and understand what love really is.. in the truest sense of the word. Pearl reminds me so much of my own nanna pearl.. silky terrier, fridge magnets, vegetable garden and her house.. I relive my childhood looking at these images. I wish I had images like these of my grandparents. Their family will treasure these images forever. You have inspired me so much with these images. xxx

April 15, 2011
When you feel like it's already been said, what's left to say....... everyone's words are so beautiful already. BUT......I look at these images again in their entirety and as I read through the reams of comments people have left, I cannot be more happier or proud of you. Yes, the images are beautiful and you have captured something very unique and special - but you did that, that is YOU who created it and not just the subject. Your ridiculous vision to see what so many others miss or take for granted is incredible. It's to be commended, appreciated and cherished - just as you should be, my dear friend Daniel xx
April 15, 2011

April 15, 2011
Dan, it was so very special to see these real honest raw and genuine images. Good on you for taking the time to document something so priceless like this. I have always regretted not photographing my great uncle and aunty that are now deceased. They lived in their home for over 60 years. My great uncle was born in the house that they lived most of their life. Being a distance away from me, i never took the time to make a photo shoot like this happen. The house they lived in was where my grandmother was born and lived for a very long time too. I would do anything to go back in time and record it. I always wanted to, but didn't take them time. This project has made me totally learn a huge lesson, not to wait next time i have the urge to do something like this. Thank you for the huge lesson Dan. I have heaps of tears my eyes, but i am so glad you did this, for this gorgeous couple and their family .
April 15, 2011
oh, sweetness. what a beautiful tribute of a gorgeous couple. thanks for putting this up. it inspires hope.

The hand on the shoulder ... the texture of their bare arms while holding hands ... amazing.
April 16, 2011
Lovely to see those three kookaburras on the line. Ginger and Pearl are such a beautiful example to us all. And I think it is SO important to celebrate couples who have made it the distance. Weddings seem to be getting bigger and fancier and more of a show these days. I hope so much that people marry for the right reasons and learn how to nurture a relationship over the years - for better, for worse, in sickness and in health, til death do us part. Great project!
April 16, 2011
Incredible series. Incredible. The low light ones are so captivating, so gentle. Truly love your work.

Feel honoured to have been allowed to have seen them - they are so very special. Thank you, Zoe :)

Amazing work and project. I hope you'll be able to continue it.

Great Stuff Dan. It’s funny - one of the main differences between you and me, besides level of talent leaning your way heavily, is that you have gone and done what you’ve thought about doing..I see Sid and Joyce who have lived across the street for me for almost 60 years (no I’ve not lived there for 60 years) and have thought of doing the same thing as you have here...but have not done it...here’s the inspiration to ! Great work mate.
